What else we lost when we lost Johnny Carson

by Lisa Sarrach

Johnny Carson has been gone for over a week now and both of his successors Jay Leno and David Letterman have paid proper tribute.  A memorial was conducted in Carson’s hometown in Nebraska this week.  His death was as quiet as his retirement; he left the scene at the top of his game, never becoming a has-been as so many stars do when the spotlight has faded.  His one private joke on all of us was recently revealed when it was reported that he was sending jokes to his favorite successor, David Letterman.

However, Johnny Carson’s passing has even a greater significance to the country at large than has been reported.  With his passing, we have also lost the last remaining /Hollywood arbiter of our innocence, class and dignity. The now old-fashioned term, good, clean fun is a thing of the past.

Don’t misunderstand; Johnny was just as capable as today’s comics to use sex to tell a joke or to razz a guest.  As a matter of fact, when you watch his Best of Carson tapes, you’re amazed at times with what he was able to get away with in the years before shows like “Seinfeld” and “Friends” arrived on the scene.

The gift that Johnny had was that he didn’t hit you over the head with it, or intentionally attempt to be outrageous.  He was subtle; he used double entendres and sly wit to entertain the adults without offending the kiddies.  It was genius then and it is genius now.

As a baby-boomer, I grew up during the Golden Age of television.  In the sixties, we all watched TV, and there was rarely anything on that wasn’t appropriate for a kid to see.  As a teenager in the seventies, my treat for good behavior was to be able to stay up and watch the Tonight Show.  Back then my mother did not have to be concerned with who was going to be on the show or what they were going to say.  Today, parents are forced to screen football games and block scores of channels to protect kids from unsavory programming.

Johnny was a ray of sunshine after a rough day at school.   He was “Must See TV” long before NBC claimed that moniker for its Thursday night lineup. Over twenty years later, I introduced Johnny Carson to my boys when the “Best of Carson” tapes became available.  Rarely have I ever heard them laugh so much and with such glee and appreciation for the talent represented on Johnny’s show.

Indifference…Our Greatest Weapon…/Hollywood’s Greatest Peril

By Lisa Sarrach

The Big Yawn…./Hollywood’s greatest peril is no longer the anger generated by us red-staters for their product or their activism, but our increasing indifference to anything and everything they do and don’t do.

Chevy Chase curses his way into total oblivion at a Washington event, causing even liberal icon, Norman Lear to distance himself from this perennial Bush basher.  Oliver Stone blames the failure of his “Alexander” on the red state Christian fundamentalists instead of looking in the mirror and realizing he made a stinker of a film, Michael Moore has a very busy week trying to overturn the results of the election in Ohio with his pal Senator Barbara Boxer from San Francisco and stuffing the ballot box for his expected win tonight as the People’s Choice for favorite film with Fahrenheit 9/11. The Passion of the Christ will be ignored by all award shows save apparently, tonight’s People’s Choice.

A note on the controversy surrounding Mel Gibson’s film, The Passion and all the pundits who have lumped Michael Moore and Mel Gibson together as the poster children for the blue-state/red-state divide in America.

/Hollywood-Hero did not launch a petition drive to advocate for “The Passion of the Christ’s” inclusion in the Oscar race for Best Picture, because there was absolutely no chance of it making a bit of difference.  Only the 5,000 or so members of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences can nominate films for Best Picture.  And they would actually have to watch the film in order to consider it.

Just how many of the secularist, liberal members of the Academy do you believe are going to take the time to watch a film that was a slap in the face to everything they believe in or more accurately don’t believe in, and was made without all those pesky studio execs and made Mel Gibson over 350 million dollars?  Case closed.  They might well nominate Mr. Moore’s film as their last shot at President Bush and once again attempt to prove their relevance in the world of politics, and again we yawn.

Award shows have become nothing more than an extended advertising campaign designed to rake in more money at the box office for the execs, and a collective orgy of self congratulation for narcissistic stars who can’t breathe if the sycophants aren’t surrounding them with love and adoration 24/7.  The Oscars and all the others long since stopped being about the quality of the work and as the ratings show, we have long since stopped caring about who wins or loses.

But we will remind people of who does care.  The pencil pushers who watch the bottom line at our nation’s studios and their investment arms.  They do care what we think.

Jerry Orbach

"Law & Order" star Jerry Orbach has died of prostate cancer at age 69, a representative of the show said.

Orbach starred for 12 seasons in the original "Law & Order" series but left to head the spin-off "Law & Order: Trial by Jury," set to debut next year.

Orbach began playing detective Lennie Briscoe in 1992, the original show's third season.

Born in the Bronx, he was in the original cast of the off Off-Broadway hit "The Fantasticks" and has appeared in such films as "Dirty Dancing," "Prince of the City" and Woody Allen's "Crimes and Misdemeanors."

We'd like to salute our troops by sharing this link to a flash movie that is a beautiful tribute to our brave soldiers serving overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Please consider donating to the USO's program, Operation Phone Home this holiday season to help our troops call their families over the holidays.  Thank you and have a wonderful holiday season.  /Hollywood-Hero

They ‘still’ don’t get it.

By: J. Wright

November 8, 2004

Truly did not want to get back up on my ‘soap box’ again. It’s now been six days since the election and the horrid attacks keep right on. (I breathe in) They seem to have the opinion that all of that ‘red’ on the map was filled with people who either stumbled and voted wrong, were devoid of any intelligence, influenced by someone, or from ‘one’ particular group. (I breathe out) Michael Moore has had a piece of art done, which by the way actually is a fantastic graphic, in hopes that it would hurt or ridicule the President. It didn’t work. He now has a map out which distorts the United States. (I breathe in) Ah, the world of theatrics. Does this have something to do with the way they think? This world truly is not a stage and we are not all actors. I chose to live in the real world where people lead real lives and speak from the heart and not a written text. Robert Redford is threatening to leave the country as if that’s going to somehow stop our voice or make a difference in what we the American people do. Please comply Mr. Redford or just do what you do best and act. It’s so amazing to me that these people who perform on stage or the ‘silver screen’ truly believe what they say matters. Perhaps Mr. Redford thinks we truly believe that he and Mr. Newman were indeed Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. (I breathe out) Now, the left wing media is on a crusade trying to analyze, scrutinize, and somehow find out what when so wrong as if something did go wrong. No, they still don’t get it. The Democratic Party is feverishly trying to find someone they can groom to run in 2008 and the ‘party signs’ haven’t all been picked up yet! Groom? How does one groom someone to be truthful? How does one groom someone to have plain old good common sense and knowledge of what the people truly want in a leader of our country? (I breathe in)

No one can fake the truth, and I truly believe that. Somehow, someway it shows. Truth shines bright in the eyes of a person and through the eyes you see the heart. In the voice you hear the compassion, deep commitment, the loyalty, the care, the words of confidence and blunt honesty. Sometimes the words may flow like a river, then at other times stumble yet show the emotion. They want to categorize us and put us into these slots of color, age, gender, marital status, income, etc. That just ‘isn’t it’. (I breathe out) We are of ALL colors, ages, and genders, single, married, and various income brackets. We just voted for the person we knew without a doubt was best for this country at this time in America’s history and this confuses them because of their vile hate for those of us who believe that morality is so very important. It had absolutely nothing to do with where we are from if you take a close look at that map of red in all it’s splendor. We were from sea to shining sea and border to border, and we were united. Please do not underestimate us because our work is not over and we march onward. (I breathe in) Michael Moore, and the other hysterical “I’m going to move” people need to take a break and relax because if they think for one minute that we are going to sit idle they are so off the mark. They are going to need all the energy they can ‘muster’ to run this race we are in now. It’s called the race to take back our country, and return it to the way our signers of that great Constitution meant for it to be. “In God We Trust”. (I breathe out) If that means they might want to move, then they should do so. Read the Constitution, you are in for the battle of a lifetime. In the wee small hours of the morning, take a ride down a street in ‘Anytown’ USA, and listen to the clicking of the typewriters, keyboards, or the ‘pinging’ of the messengers sending the word out. We are here, we are Blessed, and we are the new media, the new tellers of the truth whether you chose to believe it or not. Put up your websites, domains, etc. We are outmatching you click for click. God Bless the people of this great land for opening the eyes of those that thought we were sitting idly bye and being taken in. We were way to smart for that and we proved it on November 2nd 2004. May God continue to bless the United States of America and our military fighting to keep us free. (I breathe in) God be with those that hate us, and help them to understand that we indeed want peace for everyone and freedom for all. We are helpers of the oppressed, not occupiers. By the Grace of God Justice will prevail and peace will come. (I breathe out)

ps: We Love Ya Ron Silver, what a guy you are!

We at The Cruise Lines didn't forget that a lot of entertainers had promised to leave the country if George W. Bush were to be reelected President.

With that in mind, we have a Special Offer for those who still want to keep their promise!

Attention: Would Alec Baldwin, Rosie O'Donnell and her wife, Ed Asner, Janeane Garafalo, Whoppi Goldberg, Al Franken, Michael Moore and his personal groomer, Cher and her vocal therapist, Phil Donahue, Rob Reiner (apparently still a "meathead"), Barbra Streisand (who has a nose for these outcomes), Jane Fonda, Vietnamese Ambassador to the U.S., as well as the entire staffs of the LA and NY Times and anyone else who made that promise, please dispose of all U.S. assets and report to Florida for the sailing of the Funship Cruise, "Elation," which has been commissioned to take you to your new vacation homes in Afghanistan.

You may opt to be dropped off in Somalia, Sudan, or Iraq.

The Florida Supreme Court will sponsor a Farewell Parade in your honor through Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade counties prior to your cruise.

Please pack for an extended stay... at least four more years.

Note: Since you advocate strict gun control, you may not bring any, but then with Jane Fonda along you won't need any.

Staffing your voyage is Bill Clinton as captain, Al Gore as cruise director, and Grey Davis, navigator. Purser Terry Heinz Kerry hopefully will be kept somewhere below decks away from the media. Dan Rather will handle communications for the cruise

Monica Lewinsky will be the "Cigar and Cigarette Girl",

Entertainment by the Dixie Chicks, Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Cameron Diaz and Eminen. John Kerry will be our Life Guard in consideration of his past experience in pulling people out of the water (unless he decides at the last minute not to go). He is advocating the elimination of the game "shuffleboard" in favor of his new game he calls "waffleboard". Be sure to pack your flip flops as you will need them while playing.

Ted Kennedy will double as Bartender and Director of Emergency Water Procedures [and as a buoy as required].

Rev. Al Sharpton will provide inspirational services, and Ex-Congressman Gary Condit as intern coordinator.

If you have any questions about making arrangements for your homes, friends and loved ones, please direct them to Senator Hillary Clinton. Her village, paid for by the United States, can raise your children while you're gone, and she can watch over all your money and your furnishings until you return.

"Bon Voyage!"

Is this a great country or what? It's called Freedom of Speech.

Michele said @ 11/12/2004 11:19 AM EST

It doesn't bother me that a lot of celebrities have opposing points of view. Variety is usually interesting. Freedom of opinion is fine, intellectual debate is fine, as long as it's kept respectful & it is not coercive. None of which apply to /Hollywood's most overly paid & least deserving untalented potty mouth whimps. I am referring specifically to stars who have seen fit to be rude, vulgar, explicit, nasty, hostile, threatening, sarcastic & just all around unpleasent in their expressions of disagreement with President Bush. Why do people like Barbara Streisand, Whoopi Goldberg, Madonna, Michael Moore, & Linda Ronstadt think it's so civilized & apprpriate to use the foulest of language to tarnish the president any way they can at a time when this garbarge exposes our weaknesses to our enemies? Christians & Republicans, too for that matter in the case of Linda Ronstadt. I absolutely don't care if Linda Ronstadt is an actively practicing Lesbian, liberal atheist or not. Why should she care if there are Chrisitans or Republicans in her audience? That's prejudice, you idiot, no matter how you phrase it & they paid to see you. God only knows why. She is an entertainer, supposedly. What a bunch of self-righteous hypocrates with overly fat wallets to waste they all our. I don't care what anyone believes or practices in their own lives so long as it doesn't harm or intefere with anyone else. I am not trying to sway anyone to what I personally believe. It's not my place to do that. It's not /Hollywood's either. But I do object when these beliefs smack of treason, are blatantly disrespectful, are forced down everyone else's throat at the expense of entertainment, & threaten the security of the U.S.A. itself. I really don't like the danger implicit in their attitudes that my rights as an individual are going to be steam rolled over by what they deem as a group is right for all. Freedom of speech doesn't mean taking liberties. Not that it will ever hurt either their massive egos or their equally fat & bloated bank accounts but I have no intention of ever purchasing any of their products anymore. They are no longer fit to be considered entertainers. I won't miss their music or their movies or concerts or whatever. I applaud Alice Cooper who hit it on the head with musicians & Stephan Baldwin & Dennis Miller & all the others like them. Note to those in /Hollywood who are actually literate: I never once resorted to using a four letter word here to get my point across except for maybe word & four. Can any of you imbeciles recognize when your vicious, vindictive poison is damaging, not wanted, not welcomed, & not appreciated? I didn't really think so. Come to think of it: it's fun despising Barbara Streisand, Whoopi Goldberg, Linda Ronstadt, Madonna, & Michael Moore. They've made it so easy.

Audie Murphy     Audie Murphy-War Record

JOHN WAYNE:  While John Wayne never officially served in World War II, it wasn't for a lack of trying:

According to Ronald Reagan: "Duke had hoped to attend the U.S. Naval Academy and was named as an alternate selection to Annapolis, but the first choice took the appointment. When war broke out, he tried to enlist, but was rejected because of an old football injury to his shoulder, his age (34), and his status as a married father of four.

He flew to Washington to plead he be allowed to join the Navy, but was turned down.

So he poured himself into the war effort by making inspirational war films.

To those at home and others around the world he became a symbol of the determined American fighting man. Duke could not be kept from the front lines.

In 1944 he spent three months touring forward positions in the Pacific theater. Duke went to Vietnam in the early days of the war.

He scorned VIP treatment, insisting he visit the troops in the field. Once he even had his helicopter land in the midst of a battle.

The Duke was also personally asked by the Marine Corp Commandant after World War II to make "Sands of Iwo Jima" after which recruitment went through the roof.  When John Wayne was honored with a square at the Grauman's Chinese Theater in /Hollywood, the sand used in the cement was brought in from Iwo Jima.

It is for these reasons, that we honor John Wayne as a true /Hollywood-Hero.
